Patsy Stone to Take D.C.!

Just a few quick items before I head off to bed:

1) U.S. midterm elections -- woo hoo! Dems take back the House AND Senate (better late than never). Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the first woman to hold this position and will soon be 3rd in line of precedence. We're 2 heartbeats away from having the first woman president! It's nice to see some positive news on the U.S. political horizon. A more in-depth post on that over the weekend.

2) Patsy's off to visit the capital of the free world (America bashers: insert eye roll here), Washington, D.C., at the end of the month. Can't wait to see all the sights (White House, Arlington National Cemetery, Vietnam War Memorial, Abe Lincoln statue, etc, etc.) and meet some work colleagues. I'll make sure to take lots of pics, although since I'm going by myself I guess I won't be in any of them. Maybe I can find a Senator and ask him/her to take one of me in front of a famous building.

2a) I will be visiting Neiman Marcus while I'm there. (or "needlessly marked-up" as my Chicago pal Maureen calls it)

3) As you all know, Thursday is terrific TV night: Ugly Betty and The Office. Fabulously funny new episodes from both shows. For the second week in a row, UB made me tear up (Wilhemina does have a heart after all!) and The Office continues to make me thank Goddess daily for the comedic genius that is Steve Carell.

Speaking of The Office, I want to do a shoutout to a fantastic fansite about the show: www.lifeintheoffice.com. I'm on the site's mailing list, so everytime there's a new post I check it out. If you're a fan of the show, give it a try. It'll be a new favourite.

4) I've been silent on the recent Belinda Stronach bashing that's been going on in the public arena lately, but have decided to air my views on the matter. As you know from reading previous posts, I'm no Belinda fan, but am going to stick up for her now (not that she needs a knight-in-shining armour).

Enough of the sexist jokes and gripes, please! No more name calling or tasteless sexual references. Let's just stick to the politics and issues and leave clothing and what may or may not have gone on in the bedroom off the front pages. It's none of our damned business.

I'd like to posit what I think is really going on here. In simple terms, Belinda's rich, attractive, successful and powerful -- and that's why these old backroom boys who don't like women in positions of power/authority keep picking on her.

On another note, I also think it's juvenile to comment on Rona Ambrose's hair. Disagree with her handling of the Environment ministry, or the U.N. environment conference, but keep her luscious locks out of it. When was the last time you noticed anyone commenting on Bill Graham's tie or Stephen Harper's shoes?

5) I've finally seen both "Marie Antoinette" and "The Queen", and I want to see "Babel" and "Stranger than Fiction", so perhaps I'll do a quadruple movie review over the next few days.

6) Last, but certainly not least, I want to encourage everyone to take a moment or two on Saturday to remember on Remembrance Day. Call your grandfather or grandmother. Hug a veteran wearing a poppy.

I'd like to thank the people of my grandparents' generation for their bravery and tenaciousness, specifically during WWII. I have to wonder if people nowadays would be willing to make the same sacrifices. Sadly, I doubt it. But at the risk of sounding preachy, I'll leave you with 3 simple words to ponder on the above subject.

Freedom isn't free. Think about it.

Patsy Stone out.
